Today Is Monday
Last week students enjoyed our shared reading of the Book by Eric Carle called today is Monday. They identified the days of the week in order and even recalled all of the evetns in the story using picture clues. They really loved the song that accompanied the story. Here is a you tube clip of the song, ask your child to sing the song for you from their reading folders and demonstrate the actions. Enjoy!
K's Learning Story
K was playing at the House centre when he proudly announced " I made 4 cupcakes" I then asked him if he could make 8 cupcakes so that he could share them with 8 friends. He looked at them puzzled for a moment then looked around for more play dough. When he realized he had none left he grabbed a kitchen tool and announced " I will cut them in half" then he counted out 8 pieces of cupcake for me! Later a friend gave him two more cupcakes so I posed another question" k, can you make enough pieces for all 24 children in our class to have a piece. He said " that is a lot" He then said" but there is no more play dough?" To which I replied " can you figure out a way to make 24 pieces?" He set to work with no help from me to cut all of his pieces in half. He counted them all at the end and proudly announced " I have 24!"
This is a great example of mathematical problem solving. Way to go K !

Random acts of Kindness Day
Friday was Random Acts of Kindness Day which fits in perfectly with our ongoing discussions about being a Bucket Filler. The students decided they wanted to "fill the teacher's buckets." Yousef helped us come up with the idea to bake cookies for them.
Peace
Today in honor of Remembrance Day we read a story by Todd Parr called the Peace Book. It has a great global yet child like interpretation of Peace. It led to a nice discussion of why we celebrate Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. In response to "What does Peace mean" we had some great answers which included:
" to be a good friend"
" to remember the people who died"
" to share our toys"
" to use our inside voices"
" to have a bed" and " to have food"

Shadows
During our sunny afternoons, we noticed that many students became fascinated with finding their shadows during our outdoor play in the afternoon. There were very curious as to why they could see their shadows only in certain parts of the playground. This curiosity led to a week long inquiry into shadows. Students had questions such as "How are shadows made?" and "Where do we see them?" We discovered through using the projector and the smartboard that we needed "light" to help us make shadows. We also figured out that we had to stand in front of the light to see it. Students brainstormed several sources of light so that we could explain why we see our shadows inside, outside and at night. (flashlight, smartboard, sun, moon)Students experimented with a variety of ways to make shadows such as their hands, their bodies and even stick puppets. Here is a journal we created using the Ipad. Please excuse the dates on the journal ( I could not figure out how to do several entries on the same date!)

International Math Circle
We were very lucky to have a visit from two students teachers ( Miss Yifei Yang and Miss. Jiang Hui) all the way from China! After a quick discussion about where they were from ( a long plane ride away) and that they speak and write in a different language ( Chinese) they offered to show our class how to write numbers in Chinese! As soon as activity centers started students were very excited to practice their Chinese numbers!
