We are well into our exploration of patterning in mathematics. Students have been engaged in a variety of activities that help them to meet the Ontario Curriculum Expectations outlined below:
Overall Expectation : explore, recognize, describe, and create patterns, using a variety of materials in different contextsSpecific Expectation: identify, create, reproduce, and extend repeating patterns through investigation, using a variety of materials (e.g., attribute blocks, pattern blocks, a hundreds chart, toys, bottle tops, buttons, toothpicks) and actions (e.g., physical actions such as clapping, jumping, tapping)
Activities that you can do at home to help support your child are:
1. Spot patterns around the house on items like rugs, bed spreads, wallpaper, clothing, tiles and encourage them to "read " the pattern as they see it. (eg. blue stripe, red zig zag, blue stripe, red zig zag, blue stripe, red zig zag, etc)
2. Use common household items such as buttons, paper clips, toy cars, bead and have your child make a patterns with them. Make it a game by trying to guess one another's patterns.
3. Create action patterns while relaxing at home (eg. touch your toes, touch your knees, touch your toes, touch your knees, etc.)
